Definitely on the "must do" list and an integral part of Thai culture. Temples along with the monarchy are the fabric that binds together the national identity. Quite different from anywhere else, temple architecture is inspiring and the glittering decoration quite stunning. The large stupas (confusingly sometimes called Chedis or Prangs) often contain religious relics and are adorned with gold, glass and small pottery pieces. A temple may well have a significant feature or represent a piece of Bangkok's rich history. Although it's not difficult to go by yourself, you will get the full cultural experience with some local assistance. Having a guide who can explain the details and nuances, gives a more enlightened perspective.
Bangkok's best temples include Wat Trimitr with its five and a half ton solid gold Buddha, Wat Po with its huge reclining Buddha - the first traditional massage school in Thailand, (massages are avalable.) and Wat Banjamaborpitr - the White Marble Temple - one of Bangkok's most beautiful temples with impressive Thai architecture.
If you're short on time you might consider combining a temple visit with the Grand Palace. Bangkok's most famous landmark is a former residence of the Kings of Thailand. Several buildings are located within the complex. You will see the Reception Palace, the Funeral Palace, The Throne Hall and the beautiful revered Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
